I love writing prompts, and this love song is the result of one I used recently. I was to take the first line of the last song I listened to, and then finish it as my own unique piece.
A little background about my song choice: I am obsessed with the soundtrack to the tv show, Nashville. Every week after a new episode airs I immediately download my favourite tracks from iTunes and listen to my playlist on repeat. I find the poetic lyrics and romantic harmonies take me deep into the best parts of myself, and I do some of my best work with Nashville music playing in the background. So it was only appropriate for this exercise that the last song I'd listened to was Lately, sung by Sam Palladio and Clare Bowen.
I Should Have Done More
I’ve been needing you lately.
Come home, won’t you, baby?
It’s so lonely without you.
There’s nothing I can do,
but beg you to hear me saying…
I’ve been crying in the ruins
of a love that you’re through with.
I waited too long, dear,
to write you this song here.
But I think it needs doing.
I should have done more.
You were worth fighting for.
You loved me and waited.
You cried with me, patient.
Now I’m here on the floor.
I’ve been wanting to call you.
But I see that it won’t do.
So I’m singing and playing,
because my heart is breaking,
I can’t be me without you.
So now,
I try,
to stand,
get by.
I should have done more.
You were worth fighting for.
You loved me and waited.
You cried with me, patient.
Now I’m here at your door….
